 Places To Visit In Meppadi

Meppadi is a small town in the hill station of  Wayanad district  of Kerala, located at a distance of 79 kms from Calicut (Kozhikode-nearest airport) . It is situated on the Calicut- Gudallur- Ootty road.

The time taken to reach Meppadi from Calicut airport  is around 3 hours. The distance is approximately 92 kms from the airport.

Meppadi in Wayanad is a beautiful place with moderate cool climate making it ideal for tourists to visit and enjoy the place.

It is dotted with tea estates and streams and is free from pollution and hustle bustle of the urban regions.

I strongly recommend the following places to visit in Meppadi, Wayanad

Places To Visit In Meppadi

Chembra Peak: The most sought after destination in Meppadi is the Chembra peak, but this  breathtaking spot is not for everyone.

The heart shaped lake atop Chembra Peak

Fairly good physical fitness is required for this trek to the topmost location of Chembra Peak, and I recommend it to only adventure seeking travellers. The height of this peak is approximately 6000 feet.

The entry to the peak  is regulated by the forest department and once you the reach the top you will be welcomed by a heart shaped lake.

This is the highlight and all the effort you take to reach the peak will be well rewarded.

It is recommended to go for the trek during dry season between November and April.

Distance from Meppadi to Chembra peak : 13 kms

Soochipara Waterfalls: This is also known as the Sentinel waterfalls and is a actually a three-tiered waterfall.

"Soochi" in Malayalam means needle and "Para"means rock. The lush green deciduous forest around the waterfall gives it a character of abundance and serenity.

The view from the top of the waterfall, of the tea estates around, makes it worth climbing and spending some great "nature time" there.

The height of the waterfall is around 200 meters and the name of the hill on which it is located is known as Vellarimala.

Distance from Meppadi to Soochipara waterfalls: 13.3 kms

Kanthampara Waterfalls: Any trip to Wayanad is incomplete without visiting the Kanthampara waterfalls.
                                                               Kanthampara waterfalls

It is located on the Meppadi- Vaduvanchal road and is easily accesible from Meppadi. A very beautiful waterfalls and surrounded by thick forest, it is abundant with flora and fauna.

The height of the waterfall is around 100 feet and is a secluded but  must-see destination.

The trek to the waterfall is adventurous and exciting provided you have a taste for steep climbing and comfortable with rocky terrain.

The drop of the waterfall is ideal for swimming and fun as it is shallow in nature.

The best time to visit the spot is October -November just after the monsoons.

Distance from Meppadi to Kanthampara waterfalls: 8 kms

Meenmutty Waterfalls: There are few waterfalls in Wayanad itself by the same name. This amazing waterfall is located on the Vaduvanchal-Ootty road at a distance of 18 kms  from Meppadi.
                                                                     Meenmutty Waterfalls

The drop of this waterfall is from a height of 300 meters and is quite risky during and after monsoons.

The dense forest cover around it also makes it quite an adventurous spot to be in. Aged people and children should not be venturing out to this location.

The force and the volume of the waterfall makes it exciting and very dangerous at the same time.

You may note this waterfall trek route is closed for most parts of the year due to above mentioned reason.

Nevertheless, dry seasons after October makes it conducive for a trek and an exciting day out.

Nellarachal Viewpoint: This is my favourite hidden spot in Meppadi

It is not known to many tourists visiting Wayanad and this makes it exotic, green and noise-free.

This viewpoint is a actually a meadow around the back-end of the famous Karapuzha dam.

Most people visit the Karapuzha  dam frontal area and return, but we discovered this picturesque and breathtaking  after a casual conversation with a local friend.

The approach road to this destination may be submerged during monsoons and it is upto you to take this risk to reach there.

But mind you- once you reach there it is blissful!

Cool strong breeze , open green meadows, a large, a very large water body of the dam encachment is what you get there.

Oxygen and sufficient oxygen is the bonus as you run, walk or jump in the meadows.
