Wayanad Ghat, in Kerala is also known by the name "Thamarassery ghat" or "Thamarassery churam" in local parlance.


 Wayanad Ghat- What is it?



Wayanad ghat  is a series of 9 hairpin bends originating at Adivaram in Kozhikode(Calicut)  and finally touching Lakkidi in Wayanad  district .

The route  gradually ascends to an altitude of  2300 feet above sea level between Adivaram and Lakkidi.

The total distance  of Wayanad ghat  is 12 kms in precise and is the  road connecting the plains of  Kozhikode and the hill district of Wayanad .

 It is a  part of the national highway 766 (earlier NH 212) which connects Kozhikode in Kerala  to Kollegal in Karnataka.

 Along the course of the Wayanad ghat, you will come across various viewpoints located at various elevations which give a breath taking view of the Kozhikode valley and beyond.

Lakkidi viewpoint in Wayanad ghat is the most popular and beautiful location for tourists,  with rocky steep cliffs on one side, and the beautiful Kozhikode valley on the other.


Structure of Wayanad Ghat in Kerala

 The Wayanad Ghat is a well constructed road and has been facilitated with interlocking bricks at the hairpin bends to prevent skidding of vehicles.

In the recent past,  the government had re-inforced the cliffs of the hairpin to prevent landslides during the monsoon.


Wayanad Ghat receives heavy showers during monsoons and is considered to be one of the wettest regions in Kerala.

The unwritten rule for traffic movement along the Wayanad ghat section is giving preference to uphill traffic.

 During monsoons,  vehicles with fog lights are highly recommended to be driven across the ghat due to it's nature of very poor visibility.
